On 26 May, when Kyivans celebrated the Day of the City, the project “Kyiv Watchmen” was presented. according to Vechirniy Kyiv. Students, historians, under the supervision of the Doctor of Historical Sciences, Mykhailo Videiko, have worked out the reconstruction of Golden Gate’s Watchmen shift.
Kyiv gauard was changed three times and showed how the mediavl guard looked in different timed and epoches. The first group of watchmen who wore the attire of the period when Kyiv had been founded had fighting axes. The second group wore the orange clothes and helmets, which had been worn during the reign of Prince Volodymyr. The third group of watchmen — with swords and hats — showed the watchmen who guarded the entrance during the reign of King Danil. The ceremony was controlled by the Doctor of Historical Sciences, Mykhailo Videiko.
‘When a new group of watchmen come, the previous one goes around the gate to check it. The process of this shift had been developing for years,’ said Mykhailo Videiko. Apart from the shift of watchmen, the medieval dances were shown. Spectators had a great opportunity to plunge into the old-time atmosphere, and take wonderful pictures. The event was held by the Historical Reconstruction Club “Spadshchyna”, the Students’ Theater “Borysfen”and the Instrumental Collective of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University
The project “Kyiv Watchmen” is going to be held next year as well.
