According to the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, Chornobyl tourism has reached a new record. In August 2019, 14 416 people visited the area. The number of tourists has increased by five times since the beginning of the year: less than 3,000 people per month visited the area in January-February, and since March the number of tourists has grown rapidly.
"The main task we face is the safety of every visitor who crosses the boundaries of the exclusion zone. The number of visitors to the Exclusion Zone is increasing significantly each year, as well as the interest to the Chornobyl topic in general. To ensure the visitors' needs for interesting and truthful information, we support the development of new forms of visits, which allow us to communicate with tourists in a high quality," the Chairman of the State Agency Vitaliy Petruk.
The increase in the number of tourists is droven by the success of the Chernobyl mini-series. As a result of this, in the area 21 visit routes were approved, including 13 land, 5 water and 3 air routes.
