What is good dental hygiene

Modern dental studies show that the health of teeth and gums is mostly ensured by proper dental hygiene. Ignoring hygiene procedures can lead to various dental diseases and tooth loss. Despite the fact that teeth consist of the hardest tissue, they are vulnerable to the harmful effects of pathogenic microflora, which begins to grow after each meal. The same applies to the gums, as microorganisms that live in soft and hard dental plaque, cause periodontal diseases. In addition, dental problems can affect the overall condition of the body. That is why it is so important to adhere to hygiene procedures to prevent tooth decay and other dental problems.

What is proper oral hygiene?

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your oral hygiene routine, but not the only one. A systematic integrated approach to the care of teeth and gums is very important.

Oral hygiene can be divided into two parts: individual and professional.

Individual oral hygiene includes the following:

• brushing your teeth thoroughly;

• cleaning your mouth after each meal;

• cleaning interdental spaces.

It is recommended to brush your teeth at least 2 times a day: in the morning after breakfast and in the evening after the last meal. Also, you need to rinse your mouth with water, and even better - with a special rinser. If it’s impossible, then you can use sugarless chewing gum.

Nowadays, there are a large number of different toothpastes. But remember that toothpaste must be selected individually along with a dentist. Cleaning the interdental areas is also very important; there are always gaps, which are difficult to access with a toothbrush. In this case, we should use dental floss. Using toothpicks for this purpose is not a good idea, as you can damage the gums and tooth enamel. If you have dental implants, bridges or braces, you should use oral irrigators, which are also known as water flossers as they provide a stream of water to remove food particles and plaque below the gum line and between the teeth. Using a tongue scraper will help you remove thousands of bacteria from the tongue's surface. In addition, you can use various rinses and foams for the oral cavity, but you should definitely consult your dentist about their use.

Professional oral hygiene is carried out by the dentist in the clinic with the use of special tools in order to avoid the appearance of many diseases and strengthen tooth enamel. This procedure helps to remove solid deposits (tartar) that cannot be cleaned with a toothbrush. As a rule, an ultrasonic device and an Air Flow apparatus are used to remove solid deposits, after which the teeth are treated with remineralizing compounds.

In addition, you must regularly visit the dentist for a routine examination, at least twice a year. This helps to detect possible problems in time and cure them at the earliest stages. Modern research shows that the health of teeth and gums affects the overall well-being of the body. Proper oral hygiene will save your money on dental treatment and give a fresh breath.
